RESTORE Scar Therapy
As your body heals after surgery (or an injury) scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is fibrotic, less mobile and less functional. Adhesions may form sticking together layers under the skin. Radiotherapy also causes fibrosis.
The RESTORE scar therapy method is a non-invasive physical scar therapy that was developed to treat scar tissue, adhesions and fibrosis. I use spacialist scar massage, stretch techniques and fascial release therapy tools alongside self-care advice to promote a healthy holistic recovery.
How can scar therapy help?
- a general aftercare, supporting health and reducing itching and other common symptoms
- it stimulates changes to take place in the scar tissue on the skin surface and to adhesions or fibrosis in the underlying tissues
- it reduces common symptoms such as pain and sensitivity, tightness, stiffness, limited movement
- it promotes functional and cosmetic improvements after surgery for puckering, thick, rasied or wide scars
A gentle treatment with great results
RESTORE method has been developed by Emma Holly, the UK's leading scar therapy teacher a Harley Street scar specialist. RESTORE scar therapy method is used within the NHS and by leading private healthcare providers. A course of treatment is usually recommended but a single session and self-care advice for you to follow at home can be helpful.
Will my scar vanish?
No, I can't make your scar tissue disappear. Results vary and early treatment is recommended for best cosmetic improvements. It is never too late and old scars can benefit as well.

What to expect after scar therapy treatment
RESTORE scar therapy method has been developed to stimulate the body's natural healing processes in order to create changes in the scar tissue. This will usually leave you feeling relaxed and it may give a sensation of lightness and more mobility at the end of the appointment. Some people feel tired and this is normal. I encourage you to listen to your body.
Changes to your scar and your symptoms
You may notice changes to your scar and symptoms immediately after the treatment or in the following days after it. Some people require a couple of treatments before any significant changes are observed.
How will I feel?
Many people have no discomfort after RESTORE scar therapy, but some discomfort after treatment is not unusual. A few people experience a sharp pain sensation which lasts for a moment and then disappears. This is normal and likely to be linked to stimulation of nerve repair and should not be a cause for concern. Increasing pain over a number of days, persisting pain for more than a few days or any increasing swelling is not usual, and should be reported to a medical practitioner.
Emotions
Talking about your experiences and compassionate touch on your scar may generate an emotional release. Ask for help if you are struggling with your mental health.
Keep a note and report back
Everyone is different, so it is helpful if you keep a note of how you respond after your scar treatment. Let me know at the start of your next appointment so I can adjust your next treatment if needed.
Some self-care tips for early healing
Look out for signs of an infection - tell your medical team if you have symptoms such as rash, increasing redness or increasing heat at your scar or general infection symptoms such as a fever or nausea.
Moisturising your scar is very important - your scar needs help as the skin's natural barrier function is damaged. Start using a moisturiser once all scabs are gone. Apply a cream, oil or gel to your scar 2-3 times a day. This supports the skin and can reduce excessive scar tissue formation.
Start some gentle and regular scar massage - as soon as the skin is ready, gentle massage movements to soften and stretch the scar and underlying tissue should help. Spend around 3-5 minutes, ideally twice daily. Don't cause pain or inflammation by massaging too hard on your new scar because this could actually cause more scar tissue formation.
Use sun protection - until the scar is fully mature (can take 12-24 months) use a high SPF on any exposed scar.
Keloid and hypertrophic scars - if your scar is increasing in height and/or width, respond quickly. Start using silicone sheets / silicone gel and / or compression products. These are proven to help with keloid and hypertrophic scars but you need to keep up with the use of these products for a prolonged period of time.
